Severe or untreated acne, or acne that has been picked at, can heal with scarring. Fractional laser acts deeply on these marks, aiming to improve and fill depressed scars and flatten raised areas.
Fractional laser creates micro-channels at different depths in the scarred area. This stimulation triggers collagen production and tissue renewal; depressed scars gradually fill in, while raised areas are flattened by an abrasion-like effect.
During healing, newly formed healthy skin covers these areas more smoothly, making the skin surface smoother.
Because acne scars come in different types (deep pits, broad depressions, raised), no single method suits every scar; laser may be combined with other treatments such as fillers or mesotherapy when needed. For details, see our acne scar page under Cosmetic Treatments.
People with pitted or broad, depressed acne scars on the face.
Those whose skin surface remains uneven and rough after acne.
People whose active inflammatory acne is under control.
Scar types and skin type are examined; active acne, if any, is controlled first. A treatment plan is drawn up.
A topical anesthetic cream is applied if needed and the scarred area is scanned with the fractional laser. Usually a few sessions are planned several weeks apart.
Redness, mild swelling and crusting can last a few days. Sun protection and moisturizing are important; the risk of temporary darkening in darker skin types is assessed by your doctor.
Noticeable improvement is generally achieved, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed. The result depends on the scar type and the skin's response.
Most people need a few sessions; deeper scars may require additional methods.
With active inflammatory acne, laser is usually postponed until the acne is under control.
