Laser Treatment for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Dual-laser technology targets the sweat glands in the underarm both from above and from beneath the skin, aiming to provide a lasting solution to excessive sweating.

About

How Does It Work?

Underarm sweat glands lie beneath the skin. Laser energy is delivered both through the skin surface and, via a thin fiber, from beneath the skin, aiming to destroy the sweat glands. Because destroyed glands do not regrow, the effect is expected to be lasting.

Botulinum toxin, by contrast, temporarily blocks the signal that stimulates the glands; its effect is temporary (usually months) and needs repeating. Laser aims to reduce the sweat glands permanently.

Scientific studies in this area still include a limited number of patients; results vary from person to person, and complete cessation of sweating cannot be guaranteed. Suitability is determined at the examination.

Who Is It For?

01

Underarm sweating

People whose daily life is affected by underarm sweating and who have not responded adequately to simple measures such as antiperspirants.

02

Those seeking a lasting solution

People who prefer a lasting method over the temporary effect of botulinum toxin.

03

Odor concerns

Those bothered by sweat-related odor and clothing stains.

Treatment Process

Step 1

Examination

The severity and location of sweating are assessed, and other medical causes (hormonal, medication-related, etc.) are reviewed.

Step 2

Treatment

The area is numbed; the laser is applied from above the skin and through a thin fiber beneath it. The procedure is usually done in the clinic and is short.

Step 3

Recovery

Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness or mild numbness can occur and usually resolve within days to weeks. You return to daily life as advised by your doctor.

FAQ

Excessive Sweating

Is the effect permanent?

Since destroyed sweat glands are not thought to regrow, the effect is intended to be lasting, but response varies from person to person.

How is it different from botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is temporary and needs repeating. Laser targets the glands directly.

Can it be used on hands or feet?

The laser method on this page is for underarm sweating. For palm sweating, see our botulinum toxin page.
